  2. Communication Styles • The Coach’s primary focus is to assist Interviewers in completing a good survey. • Part of giving feedback involves helping Interviewers improve their skills. • When giving feedback, knowing each Interviewer’s communication style is important to ensure success.

  3. Communication Styles Some challenges of being an effective Coach include: • Recognizing different communication styles. • Knowing what motivates these different communication styles. • Knowing what feedback style to use with these different communication styles.

  4. Communication Type Interviewers and Coaches can be separated into one of four communication types: • Driver • Collaborator • Contributor • Investigator

  5. Communication Type / Driver Driver Strengths: • Direct • Practical • Decisive • Confident • Clear, to the point • Task oriented

  6. Communication Type / Driver Driver Drawbacks: • Challenges others • Impatient • Insensitive • Too independent • Need to control • Domineering

  7. Communication Type / Driver Type of Feedback Driver prefers: • Quick • Direct • To the point • Focus on “what” to do

  8. Communication Type/ Collaborator Collaborator Strengths: • Talkative • Friendly • Enthusiastic • Approachable • Involves others

  9. Communication Type/ Collaborator Collaborator Drawbacks: • Overly sensitive • Lack follow-through • Disorganized, unprepared • Subjective decision making • Feelings easily hurt

  10. Communication Type/ Collaborator Type of feedback Collaborator prefers: • Conversational • Allow time for anecdotes and verbalizing/venting • Sensitive to feelings • Focus on what to do and who can help

  11. Communication Type / Contributor Contributor Strengths: • Patient, agreeable • Predictable • Easygoing, calm • Listens closely • Responsive to others

  12. Communication Type / Contributor Contributor Drawbacks • Avoids confrontation • Slow to change • Slow to offer ideas • Indecisive • Withholds feelings

  13. Communication Type / Contributor Type of feedback the Contributor prefers: • Patience, time to respond • Non-threatening • Ask questions to draw person out • Supportive

  15. Communication Type / Investigator Investigator Strengths: • Detailed, well prepared • Diplomatic • Analytical • Restrained • Systematic

  16. Communication Type / Investigator Investigator Drawbacks: • Critical • Inflexible • Insensitive • Too cautious • Imposes high standards

  17. Communication Type / Investigator Type of feedback Investigator prefers: • Objective • Thorough • Accurate • Patient, allowing time to change

  18. Communication Type / Investigator Type of feedback Investigator prefers: • Predictable, no surprises • Analytical • Focus on what to do and why to do it (and appeal to logic)

  19. Summary… • Keep in mind the Interviewer’s communication style when preparing for the feedback session. • The most effective Supervisor always tailors his/her approach to the Interviewer. This ensures the Interviewer will be comfortable and receptive during the feedback process.
