  1. MYTH or FACT? • Most kids in high school smoke cigarettes regularly. • Answer: MYTH In 1996/97, an estimated 29% of Canadian youth, aged 15 to 19, were smokers (21% of Males, 31% Females).

  2. MYTH or FACT? • Smoking is only harmful if you smoke for a long time (20 to 30 years or more). • Answer: MYTH The physical damage from smoking sets in almost immediately ~ coughing & weezeing, more phlegm, smaller & damaged lungs, weaker heart, poor fitness…

  3. MYTH or FACT? • Tobacco kills more people each year than motor vehicle collisions, suicides, homicides & AIDS combined. • Answer: FACT Each year, tobacco causes FOUR TIMES as many deaths as motor vehicle collisions, suicides, homicides & AIDS combined!

  4. MYTH or FACT? • Within two days of quitting smoking, your sense of taste & smell are greatly improved. • Answer: FACT There are immediate benefits of quitting. CO2 & nicotine levels drop, heart & lungs repair some damage, breathe easier, smoker’s cough will disappear,  energy…

  5. MYTH or FACT? • Over 200 young people become smokers each day. • Answer: FACT There are over 80,000 new smokers each year! 90% of these young people will be trapped into regular smoking that typically lasts 30 to 40 years.

  6. MYTH or FACT? • Chewing tobacco is less harmful & less additive than cigarettes. • Answer: MYTH One “dip” of smokeless tobacco can deliver as much nicotine as several cigarettes. Can cause bleeding gums, sores, mouth cancer, stained teeth, heart disease & strokes…
