  3. CORE • Congress of Racial Equality • Founded in 1942 • Nonviolent protesting • Organized the Freedom Rides • Helped set up March on Washington

  4. SCLC • Southern Christian Leadership Conference • Formed in 1957 • Nonviolent Protests • Organized Montgomery Bus Boycott, Birmingham Protest, March on Washington

  5. SNCC • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee • Formed in 1960 • Nonviolent protest– Black Power in later 60s • Helped organize the March on Washington, Freedom Summer

  6. VEP • Voter Education Project • Set up by SNCC, NAACP, SCLC, CORE • Aimed at voter registration and not protesting

  7. MFDP • Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party • Created in 1964 • Created to compete with all white Democratic Party • Politically Driven

The Black Panthers The Black Panthers was a militant group organized to protect blacks from police abuse. • became the symbol of young militant African Americans. • created antipoverty programs. • protested attempts to restrict their right to bear arms. Several SNCC leaders urged African Americans to use their black power to gain equality.

  11. Malcolm X • One of the leaders of Nation of Islam • Initially promoted separation of whites and blacks as well as violence at times • Left Nation of Islam and changed views • Assassinated on Feb. 21, 1965

  12. Rosa Parks • Part of the Montgomery Bus Boycott • Mother of Civil Rights Movement • Died in 2005

  13. Thurgood Marshall • Led NAACP in the Brown v. BOE case • Became first African American to serve on the Supreme Court • Died in 1993

  14. Stokely Carmichael • Leader of SNCC • Promoter of Black Power • Participated in Freedom Rides and other city protests • Died in 1998

  15. Fannie Lou Hamer • Part of SNCC and later Head of MFDP • Gave speech at the National Democratic Convention • Died in 1977

  16. Huey Newton & Bobby Seale • Co-Founders of Black Panthers • Inspired by Malcolm X • Advocated violence if needed • Newton was killed in 1989, Seale is still alive

  17. Black Power • Black self-determination • Some advocated force, others advocated black nationalism and organization • Wanted African Americans to take control of their futures
