  5. Interdependence • Exists when countries depend on one another for goods, raw materials to make goods, and markets in which to sell goods

  6. Globalization • The development of a world culture and an interdependent economy

  7. Why is the World Getting Smaller? • people can talk across an ocean • bullet trains speed workers from city to city • jet planes cross oceans in several hours • glass cables carry 300,000 long-distance calls at once • news can be broadcast live to the entire world at the same time via satellite • cellular phones have brought cultures closer • faxes have brought people closer • millions of people use the Internet

  8. Technology • Communication technology links people around the world. • Faster transportation makes it easy to travel long distances.

  9. Other Cultures • It is important to learn about other cultures for the following reasons: • to see connections between the United States and the world • To become an informed member of the global community.

  12. Responsibilities in a Democracy • Voting • Respecting the property and privacy of others

  13. Agriculture vs. Information • Agricultural Revolution – people learned to grow corps on a regular basis which is important to maintain a civilization • Information Revolution – people can travel around the world more easily and communicate faster which brings the cultures closer together

  14. Internet • Improved telephone cables and satellites have helped to improve the internet BUT the computer and the microchip are what made the internet possible.

  15. The World’s People Closer • Transportation technology takes people farther faster than ever before while communication technology keeps people connected even across oceans.
