Introduction: From Islamic Perspective: “And be steadfast in your prayer and pay charity, whatever good you send forth for your future, you shall find it with Allah is well aware of what you do” Al-Baqarah : 110 • Seen as an implication of the ideal of community within the religion • The spirit of helping others to earn God’s pleasure is best reflected in Muslim society in the field of education.

  3. From Western perspective: Existential psychologist view human as a way of being in search for purpose and reflection of meaningfulness as the factor for involvement in community services but ignore the spirituality needs in human nature

  4. Justification of the study: • Voluntary activity among the elderly is a newly emerging practice in Malaysia • While most elderly Muslim would prefer to choose religious practice which involve more on themselves • Therefore there is a need to understand the personality and quality of elderly people who do voluntary activity in particular HIV shelter home.

  5. Case Study • RUMAH SOLEHAH: • A project under Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia (IMAM) • Was established in 1998 • Caring for women and children living with HIV/AIDS • Under the leadership of Dato’ Dr Musa Mohd Nordin • So far, Rumah Solehah has taken care of 70 women and 50 children • At present- 9 children ( 2 months to 13 years old) and 5 ladies ( 30s to 70s) • Admin staff -2, caregiver 4, security 1 • 4 of them are elderly people.

  10. Meaningful Experiences Doing Voluntary Job • Self-satisfaction • Self-therapy • Help the unfortunates • Self development • FardhuKifayah- responsibility to the community

Conclusion • Extraversion in EPQ-S seems to be the dominating dimension for all female volunteers. • Social in VPI is the common dimension among all volunteers accept for the male volunteer. • Meaningful experience are mainly related to Fardhu Kifayah of helping others for going self-interest, self-therapy and self-satisfaction achieved .
