  2. Vendor considerations • Vendors are willing to work with customers to set up profiles • Profiles can be changed • Best to consider options/desired outcomes during initial stages of planning • Shelf-ready programs beneficial

  3. Outsourcing possibilities • Bibliographic records can be purchased • Shelf ready programs for collection development • Authority control can be outsourced through vendors • Recon and/or reclassification projects can be outsourced • Metadata/digitization outsourcing available

  4. Need to examine departmental procedures prior to outsourcing • Look at departmental needs • Talk to other vendors offering same services • Examine cost and manpower • Balance quality and quantity • Investigate local network and workflow issues • Examine problem identification and resolution following record loads

  5. One outsourcing venue • Yankee Book Peddler is the vendor for UNR’s popular book collection • YBP is the vendor for UNR’s Juvenile collection (prize winning books) • UNR has a shelf-ready profile set up with YBP • www.ybp.com/

  6. Shelf ready outsourcing • Blackwell provides UNR with a shelf-ready collection development program • Profiles are coordinated with BNA representative and subject bibliographers • Variety of disciplines covered in the shelf-ready program

  7. Enhancement of OPAC records • Blackwell enhances OPAC records with tables of contents • BNA also enhances our records with summary notes • BNA’s enhancement service is used for newly added print monographs • www.blackwell.com/

Electronic resources • MARC records are purchased for some electronic books and other electronic resources • Books 24 x 7--MARC records are loaded into the online catalog; UNR provides file of deleted records to vendor: www.books24x7.com/ • CRC Press books: www.crcpress.com/ • NetLibrary booksare purchased by UNR and bibliographic records areobtained from OCLC: www.oclc.org/ • Rand publications: www.rand.org/

  9. Electronic resources • Some electronic resources are available for free • Staff needs to check designated vendors websites for new electronic resources to add to online catalog • California e-books: www.californiaebooks.com/ • Some California e-books not free

  10. Serials Outsourcing • A-Z list outsourcing available from various vendors • Serials Solutions provides A-Z lists; MARC records for specific collections • EBSCO also provides A-Z lists • UNR creates its own A-Z lists; uses Serials Solutions MARC records • www.serialssolutions.com/

Authority Control Outsourcing • Vendors such as MARCIVE provide authority control for libraries • MARCIVE does authority control on names and subjects (LC and Mesh) for UNR • UNR sends new bibliographic records on a monthly basis to MARCIVE • Vendor follows up with new authority records (sent electronically to UNR) • UNR has found it easy to update bibliographic records through MARCIVE • UNR handles its own series authority control

  12. Cover images for OPAC • UNR has switched to Amazon for cover images in the online catalog • No cost to purchase cover images with Amazon • Araby Greene changed WWW options in INNOPAC to add cover images to UNR’s online catalog • www.amazon.com/

  13. Recon project outsourcing • UNR has used Backstage for a Dewey recon/reclass project and an LC recon project • UNR provided vendor with shelflist cards • Backstage supplied MARC records • Follow-up was a consideration on selecting • www.bslw.com/

Digitization/metadata outsourcing possibilities • Digitization/metadata projects are a consideration for some libraries • There is an technical services process to scan and OCR items for the Basque Studies Department • Lister Technologies provides content digitization and metadata extraction; storage of digital content and metadata • Lister Technologies has guaranteed 99.995% accuracy in digitization • www.listertechnologies.com/
