  3. When the Spanish reached Maubila, they found a large town surrounded by a high wall made of tree poles called a palisade. • Tuskaloosa went inside a house and refused to come out. • The Indians sang and danced loudly and suddenly attacked the Spanish.

  4. The Indians arrows and spears could not go through the metal armor the Spanish wore. • The fight lasted all day and many Indians were killed (thousands). • The Spanish did not know what happened to Tuskaloosa during the battle and his body was never found.

  5. The battle of Maubila is believed to be the largest battle in North America between Indians and Europeans. Battle of Maubila • de Soto lost 42 of his men and 7 horses. • The Spanish remained in Maubila to recover from their wounds and buried the dead. • de Soto continued his journey moving north and westward, still expecting to find gold and silver.

  6. His expedition reached the Mississippi River, where de Soto became ill with fever. • When he died, his men weighted his body down with sand and buried him in the Mississippi river. • The Indians believed he was immortal. • Some memebers of de Soto’s expedition returned to Spain and told the story of the Spanish entrada (access).
