Part 1: personal stamps • Before we begin our next project I want you to think about symbols, initials, and personalization and create your own design for a personal stamp which can then be used to mark all your future works as being made by you. • These are to be made on approximately 1” x 1” x 2” rectangular pieces of clay. • On one end you are to carve out your stamp. (You may wish to have a different stamp on the other end). And along the middle, carve your name.

Part 2: Individualizing your Projects • As you continue learning to work on the wheel, your second part of this project allows you the freedom to make this on the wheel or by hand. • Part 2 deals again with making the project personal, and in your style, and appealing to you. If you don’t like the project, you won’t want to finish it!!

  11. First think about function. Do you like to drink coffee? Lemonade? Mountain Dew? You might drink these all from a differently shaped cup. • Next think about size. Do you like A LOT of coffee? Or do you just drink an espresso? This might determine size. • What kinds of things do you have with your drink?   14. getting started • To begin start by going back to the idea of the stamp. Take a page in your sketchbook and separate it into 4 sections. In each section, come up with a different idea for your stamp. This can be a pattern, a symbol, your initials done in a crazy way, an image, almost anything. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM HEARTS, STARS, FLOWERS, OR RAINBOWS. When you have 4 DIFFERENT ideas, show the teacher.

  15. The next step is to decide your best work, and whether or not you want to make it out of positive space or negative space. (Keep in mind, if you carve in your actual design/symbol, when you stamp it, it will stick out of your art rather than recess in). NOTE: LETTERS MUST BE MADE BACKWARDS TO SHOW UP CORRECTLY!!!! • And you can make your own stamp! PART II • Before you begin to create your cup, you must of course come up with an idea. So think about what you chose for your stamp design. Can you work with that?

  16. For your cup design, Ideally you should consult your personality papers for ideas of what aspects of your personality you might highlight. Do you want to show your love for a book/movie? Or a sport? Or a type of food? Or an animal? Or your cultural heritage?   17. tips • Don’t forget about the handle! You can do a lot with the handle. • Don’t forget about the option of a plate that goes with the cup. • Don’t forget about what you might do for glazing. • Don’t forget about making it functional & fun!!!
