  1. Design Process of Oakley’s Kolby Felts Period 4a 9-15-09

  2. When: Oakley’s was founded by 25 year old man named Jim Jannard after dropping out of pharmacy school in 1975. He rounded up $300 and started the business naming after his dog Oakley. He started off by making a better handgrip for motocross motorcycles. He made the grip from a new high-traction material he called "Unobtanium" that shaped to the human hand. From there it spread creating goggles, sunglasses etc.

  3. Where: 417,000-square-foot building ¾ of the building is devoted to manufacturing

  4. How: Oakley invests heavily in technology, not only in R&D and in the products, but in the machines that make its products. Every machine was created by the Oakley design department. Oakley builds its own parts, invents programs to run cutting tools, and even develops mold processes unheard of in the world of industrial manufacturing. They use a lot of rapid prototyping equipment.

  5. Overview: A lot of technology goes into the design of Oakley's. The design of Oakley's are mainly hand sketched than modeled. They use a lot of rapid prototyping to build replicas or models of the original design. They create there own machines to build the design as well as there own cutting tools etc.

  6. List of steps: • Brainstorm new ideas • Research new technology • Sketch new designs • Hand model new design • Create new machines needed to manufacture design. • test the design • process the design They sometimes use 3d modeling on computers but they like to hand make there design

  7. Why it is used: This design process is used so that they can efficiently create new designs that fit new problems or needs in the object they are designing. They have all technology and tools built for the project so they never have to go outside of the Oakley factory to get anything built.

  8. Benefits: • All the Oakley technology that they use stays in one place • They always have the machines to cut, create, and build there products. • By focusing mainly on the technology the product works more efficiently and if worth the money. • Everything they need to test and build product is in the same place.

  9. How it relates: The Oakley design process relates to the one we use by researching the idea and finding out the facts and flaws in other products similar. We have to test our product to make sure it works properly and is able to be sold.
