All religions believe in the same God and go to the same heaven when they die There is only one God and those who worship in the right religion will go to heaven, those who worship God in a different religion will not go to heaven There is no God Christian attitudes towards other religions Learning Objective: To explore Christian attitudes towards different religions (E-G) Allwill be able to describe the key words and the different Christian views towards other religions (C-D) Mostwill be able to explain why there are different Christian attitudes towards different religions through the use of bible quotes (A*-B) Somewill be able to answer an exam practice question based on this topic

Evangelism • Some Christians believe they should try to encourage everyone to become members of their faith • Jesus told the early disciples (followers) to go and make disciples of all nations • Although everyone should have the right to practise their own religion, only Christianity has the complete truth about God Extension: Reflect on any experiences you may have had with evangelism. How did it make you feel? Imagine if someone was evangelising you – how would you feel?

Missionary Work • Some Christians take part in missionary work to spread the gospel (Good News about Jesus) • Bring the message of Christianity to everyone in their own country and all over the world • For hundreds of years Christians travelled around the world as missionaries • Felt it was their duty to convert as many people as possible because people could only reach heaven if they were Christian • Important to give everyone the chance to ‘know’ God • There are still missionary societies today. Their main work is to help people in developing countries by following the example of Jesus. Extension: think about the advantages and disadvantages of missionary work

Extension: think about how ecumenism could help to combat racism Ecumenism • The name of a movement that tries to untie different Christians • Include hundreds of different Christian groupsthat often practise their faith differently • Many denominations (groups), mainly Protestant and Orthodox, meet as members of the World Council of Churches in order to celebrate the fact that they all believe that Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth and is the Saviour • The spirit of ecumenism has been encouraged by many Asian and African churches, even though they have been greatly persecuted

Extension: think about how this could help to combat racism Taizé • In 1940 Robert Schutz founded a religious movement of monks in Taizé in France that sheltered Jewish refugees escaping Nazi Germany until 1942 • Taizé is a place of pilgrimage for young people from all over the world, as an ecumenical community, works to break down the barriers between Christian denominations • The monks are from different countries and different churches
