  1. Chinese do not want conflict with the U.S.!!! Orville Schell

  2. Project requirements Visual presentation (some words, but it should be much more visual (video & images) then written) • Must clearly define the issue. • Must present at least 2 examples for each • Should include one video clip! • Must clearly present how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has responded to the issue.

  3. Presentations • Learning Stations set up in the room • Groups of four: Two of the four will present during the first round of presentations. Then they will switch places, so all students will have time to go to each learning station.

  4. Why the U.S. should not fear China! The Chinese government has so many problems domestically therefore Chinese leaders are not looking for trouble with the U.S.!! • Demographic problem-since the 1970s China’s birth rate has plummeted while the number of elderly people has risen. • Geography -14 neighbors • Corruption: Capitalism run amuck-no FDA no regulatory agencies • Nation State- only about 20% of China is non-Han. Tibetan Issue

  5. Problems facing the CCP. • Nation State- only about 20% of China is non-Han. Uygers Issue. • Repression of free speech & protest • Environmental Problems

  6. Demographic Problem Group 1 • Who will take care of the older generation? • By 2050 over 33% of the population will be over 60 years old. • The U.S. is struggling and we will only have 26% of pop over 60 • The Communist government has to start to build institutes for young people to contribute to their own retirement in the future. • China has no national retirement/ social security plan. • Government employees have some government retirement and some city workers, but most people do not. • Gender imbalance- 119 men to 100 women. This imbalance will also create problems for the CCP.

  7. Geography Group 2 • U.S. has 2 neighbors, land neighbors Canada and Mexico to worry about (although neither a real threat) • China has 14 land neighbors and have not had good relations with it’s neighbors in the past. China also has several nuclear powers near them and they are also worried about Taiwan. • Military is used to help protect borders and deal with neighbors.

  8. Corruption- capitalism run amuck!!Group 3 • There are no FDA institutions, no regulatory agencies. • Baby food- • Milk • Corruption in industries

  9. Xizang Province-TibetGroup 4 • Tibet is 2 times the size of Texas, about 2 million people with few big cites and the people are spread out throughout the region. • The area has a huge amount of resources. • There are about 6 million Tibetans outside of China, and the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans in the area want autonomy. • From the Chinese Han perspective, 1.3 billion people are not going to give up 30% of its land and resources to the Tibetans.

  10. Xinjiang ProvinceGroup 5 • Uygher Muslims in Xinjiang region, mostly Muslims in central Asia and China. The region consists of 30-35% of China’s territory and they are arguing they should not be part of China. • China needs their resources and the area to serve as a border protection.

  11. China response to Tibet & Uygher issues? Group 4 & 5 • China is trying to solve the Uygher problem by changing the demographic make up of the region, they are developing the area and moving in large number of Han Chinese. Drowning the indigenous people in a sea of Han. • Encouraging Han Chinese to move to both the Uygher areas and Tibet, to develop the areas. • China has no problem with this strategy, except that the International community seems to have real sympathy for these groups. It is P.R. damage for China.

  12. Repression of speech or protestGroup 6 • Liu Xiaobo-Charter O8- calls for political reform. • Protection from development: Property rights & the “Nail House”. • Xiamen protest- (industrial pollution)- river water pollutants. • 2008 Weng’an riots-alleged police cover-up of girls murder.

  13. Freedom of Expression? Sometimes? • Falun Gong (other religions tolerated)

  14. Environmental ProblemsGroup 8 • China’s rise as an economic power have no clear parallel in history, so its pollution problem has shattered all precedents. • Great resource: Asia Society: China’s Environmental Challenge. Search for title: Clearing the Air.
