What is Sportsmanship? • a commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity. • …losing without complaint and victory without gloating • …treating others as you wish to be treated and respect others and one's self • …self-control, courteous, and accepting results of one's actions • …being a good citizen.

  5. Positive Sporting Behavior Tips  * If you make a mistake, do not pout or make excuses. Learn from it, and be ready to continue to play. * If a teammate makes a mistake, offer encouragement, not criticism. * If you win, do not rub it in. * If you lose, do not make excuses.

  6. Practice Positive Sporting Behaviors • Learn your sport • Be polite • Stay Cool • Avoid disputes with violence • Cheer your teammates on • Acknowledge and applaud exceptional plays • Respect Officials • Reaction – win or lose

  7. Is Winning Everything? "Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.”

  10. Student Fans • How do you implement stricter standards “without taking all the fun out of it?” • What ways can you positively impact student fan behavior at contests (both home and away)?
