NISCC is a Sector Skills Council • NISCC is a partner in the UK Alliance ‘Skills for Care and Development’ (SfC&D) – • Skills for Care & Development (SfC&D) is the sector skills council for the social care, children and young people’s workforce. • Other partners in SfC&D: Care Council for Wales (CCW) Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) Skills for Care, England

What are the key goals of sector skills councils? 4 key goals: • to reduce skills gaps and shortages. • improve productivity, business and public service performance. • increase opportunities to boost the skills and productivity of everyone in the sector's workforce. • improve learning supply including apprenticeships & higher education

Project work • Funding from Employer Investment Fund • 4 projects: • Recruiting a World Class Workforce • Ambassadors in Care • A Question of Care A Career for You (AQCCY) • Mobile Knowledge and Learning Solutions • Supporting Employers Develop Staff Skills and Knowledge on Electronic Assistive Technology (eAT) • Learn from Learning Website

  5. The Vision By 2019, individuals will be supported by a confident, knowledgeable and skilled social care workforce, working creatively with Electronic Assistive Technology to support their well-being, choice and independence.

  6. Qualification Profile • building a qualifications profile of the social care workforce. • a combination of information from the questionnaire and employer engagement. • To date we have not had a full picture of the skills within the social care workforce across the voluntary and private sectors which has put us at a significant disadvantage in terms of advocating for social care as a skilled workforce.

  7. Mobile Knowledge & Learning Solutions (MKLS) • Aim to showcase the latest technologies that support workplace learning • Technology that makes learning more accessible to those that need it, when they need it and as they need it. • Technology that helps staff retain and remember crucial learning • Developing free learning resources and services designed for delivery on mobile devices. • 4 mobile apps developed in partnership – employers, education institutions, RQIA, DHSSPSNI etc.

Access to bite size information on important areas of training for DCW Values and behaviours What are values?, What is Person-Centred Practice + Scenarios Respect and Dignity, NISCC Codes of Practice + Scenarios Safeguarding What is Safeguarding, What is Abuse, types of abuse, how to identify abuse and what to do + Scenarios (Meet Fred/Alison/Sadie) Safeguarding children + Scenarios Administration of medication Dos and Don’ts NISCC Guidance Service user health and well-being Pressure Sores and Skin Care, Infection Control, Hand washing, PPE, Safe food handling and risk assessment. Domiciliary Care Toolkit

Recruiting World Class Workforce • Raising the profile of the care sector - rewarding, valuable, long term career option • Improving public awareness of social care – caring is complex/variety/challenging but vital role • Ensuring informed choice into (or out of) the sector –clear understanding of roles/services • Getting the right people into the right posts with the right qualities

  14. NI Ambassador Service? • Recruit a pool of care workers • Know the work ‘from the inside’ – window into care • Main role - raise the profile of working in care

A Question of Care – A Career For You (AQCCY) • A free online resource about work in early years and social care settings • Short video clips bring to life the work of the sector - a window into the day to day encounters of this work • Multi choice questions - a self-assessment challenge for people to see how they match up to what’s needed • Immediate feedback builds understanding of the qualities needed for early years and social care work

Project Feedback • All FE Colleges using the resource – Induction of new students, Personal Development Plans, recruitment and events. • Belfast Met - Level 5 managers – “gave useful insight with regard to their value based and understanding of person-centred care” – Developmental tool • Promoted to all schools, DEL Jobs and Benefits advisors/community advisors • Employers using to assist with recruitment/induction/development of new/existing staff • “To be employed is to be at risk.   20. Selection is paramount to making sure - The right person Does the right job At the right time In the right place For the right reasons. Happy staff = happy residents = happy care home
