  2. Background Information • Author: Connie Porter • Setting: Philadelphia, PA,1864,during the Civil War • Series: American Girls Collection

  3. Main Characters • Addy -- an African girl named Addy who loved jump roping. She didn’t know her birthday. • Pa – Addy’s father; used to be a slave in the South but ran away to the North • Momma – Addy’s mother; also used to be a slave in the South but ran away to the North • M’Dear – Addy’s elderly friend who lives upstairs • Sarah Moore – Addy’s best friend

  4. Summary • Addy needed to get medicine for M’Dear because she was sick • The clerk helped all other customers but ignored Addy because she was black • When he finally asked what they wanted, he was very rude and threw the medicine on the counter. • On the streetcar the conductor said no blacks were allowed. So Addy got off and ran home. • At the end the South surrendered and the war ended • Addy picked April 9, the day the war ended, as her birthday because she was so happy

  5. What I liked What I liked about this book is it is teaching us that race doesn’t matter, and all human beings have feelings.

  6. What I hated What I didn’t like about this this that it was a girls’ book but it was interesting to find out what girls read. Very interesting!!
