Operators’ use of IMEI 1 of 4 Customer Care • Identify Customers’ equipment type • Provide Model Specific help to Customers on accessing network features • Know when a customer calls what equipment she is using • Offer pro-active advice if issues are known about • Check IMEI quoted (customer provided) is correct using Check Digit

  6. Operators’ use of IMEI 2 of 4 Market Information • Unambiguously identify every equipment type • Identify total numbers of each equipment type on Operator’s Network • Check dealers are connecting what they claim! (Subsidy may be tied to features etc.)

Operators’ use of IMEI 3 of 4Model Performance Metrics • Toll Tickets (Billing Computer records) imported into data warehouse. • IMEI is one field, as is the reason for the call cleardown • Can search records, grouping by TAC code to identify: • Dropped Call Rate per handset type • Revenue gained per handset type- can feed into subsidy decisions (Mean Call Duration, Number of Calls, Number of Text Messages sent etc.)

  8. Operators’ use of IMEI 3 of 4Security • IMEI is specific to each handset • Stolen handsets can be blacklisted • GSM Association fund a body to co-ordinate IMEI registrations and also have a central database where Operators can exchange stolen phone information (Blacklist Exchange)
