Health Risks to the musculoskeletal Apparatus (currently in the research stage) • compared with international standards – systematic; • applicable to Germany: • Musculoskeletal apparatusdisorders are not occupational illnesses • in the hairstyling trade! • In Germany, the topic of ergonomics isonly about health prevention;never (not yet (?)) about rehabilitation!

  6. Health Risks to the Musculoskeletal Apparatus • Literature in Germany shows: 15% and accordingly, 21% of absenteeism in the hairstyling trade is caused by musculoskeletal disorders (source: absenteeism report 2010; IKK Baden-Württemberg and Hessen survey, 2007) • International surveys report 41% - 92 % of hairdressers with shoulder pain • Only a limited number of examinations • 1 study (by means of measurement techniques) on posture (upper arm, 1 level) • No studies performed on differenciated activity analyses

  7. Aims of the BGW Study • Identification of activities and posture that can be potentially harmful • Which activities and posture come into question? • How can one differentiate among the possibilities? • How often do they occur and how long do they last? • How do they have to be evaluated in terms of repetition, frequency, amplitude and strength • Determining the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in the upper extremities in hairdressers in Germany • Deriving methods of prevention

  8. Measuring the posture and force components during selected activities using theCUELA measuring system in Studio 78 CUELA measuring system Institute for German Social Accident Insurance (IFA)
