  2. CSW History • 1972 Established as UH Manoa Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) • 1986 Named UH President’s CSW in a systemwide reorganization

  3. CSW Membership • Executives (5) • APTs (5) • Faculty Members (6) • Civil Service Employees (5) • Graduate Students (5) • Ex Officio representatives and liaisons (8) With representation from as many of the campuses as possible

  4. CSW Mission • Committed to the support, well-being, and advancement of all University of Hawai‘i women • Advisory to the UH President on issues affecting women throughout the university system

  5. CSW Responsibilities • Evaluate campus climate for women • Disseminate information • Foster awareness • Advocate safe and civil campus environments • Promote equity and advancement • Support compliance with federal laws • Encourage professional and personal development

  6. Impact of CSW • Establishment of childcare at UHM • Supported the creation of Bridge to Hope • Instrumental in implementing UHM initial gender equity Title IX institutional plan • Improved awareness of campus safety and security • Instrumental in the development of sexual harassment policy

  7. Report on FB 07-09 Biennium Proposals • Safety and Security • Women’s Leadership and Advancement

  8. Safety and Security • President’s Office provided research funds to conduct surveys on all campuses • Results made available to Chancellors to inform development of new campus programs • Follow up analysis of attitudinal survey is needed

  9. Women’s Leadership and Advancement • Proposal for leadership training led to development of the President’s Emerging Leaders Program • Approximately 2/3 of the first cohort of PELP participants were women

  10. FB 09-11 Biennium Proposals • Recruitment and Retention of Women and Under-Represented Minorities in Faculty Ranks • Campus Safety • Leadership/Professional Development: A Focus on APT/Civil Service Employees • Honoring the Women of the University of Hawai‘i

Recruitment and Retention of Women and Under-Represented Minorities in Faculty Ranks • Anticipated recruitments will provide opportunities to hire women and minorities in junior ranks • Accessible childcare has been identified as a major concern. • Goal: on-line survey of students, faculty and staff to assess specific needs and inform system and campus responses

  12. Campus Safety • Concern: prevalence of myths around sexual assault, stalking and relationship violence • Plan: Produce an educational brochure

  13. Leadership/Professional Development: A Focus on APT/Civil Service Employees • Concern: Capable workforce to step in as civil service employees retire • Plan: University-supported, equitable access to workshops and training to increase motivation and promote skill development

  14. Honoring the Women of the University of Hawai‘i • Continued development of PowerPoint presentation for use in UH-sponsored activities such as UH Day at the Legislature, etc.
