  1. Research and Technology activities at ENEA ORIENTED TO CLIMATE SERVICE Vincenzo Artale(vincenzo.artale@enea.it) ENEA Energy and Environment Modeling, ENEA Technical Unit (UTMEA, http://utmea.enea.it/) CR Casaccia, Rome (Italy)

  2. ENEA mission on climate issue: To understand and predict changes in Earth’s environment by: The analysis of in situ and satellite data and developing numerical climatemodeling of the Earth Systems and in particular of the Mediterranean Region; To conserve and manage natural resources by: The development of modeling tools/technological platform to fill the gap between RD&D results and market applications; To meet economic, social, and environmental needs by: Elaboration of integrated mitigation and adaptation strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change and to keep citizens informed of the changing environment around them;

  3. Climate Risk • the need for more regionally (locally) detailed information of important climate variables (e.g. temperature and precipitation) reducing the the uncertainty of the climate response from human forcing • when the integrated assessments is adopted the climate policies must encompass and incorporate increasing the complexity of the integrated system model (ISM) ENEA - UTMEA

  4. the future evolution of Protheus? the ISM at MIT see Schlosser et al., J.of Climate, may 2013 ENEA - UTMEA

  5. Impacts in keyareas Here are some examples of the impacts of climate change on Italy in key areas • Energy (Loading of the network) • Tourism (snow cover) • Sea Level Rise (coastal management) • Water Supply (Sanitation) and Hydrology of Civil Infrastructures and River runoff • Terrestrial ecosystems ENEA - UTMEA

  6. DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM • The technologicalsystems, the "environmental” system, the economic-productive and the social are stronglyinterdependent. • Disturbance to the technologicalsystems (powergrid, telecommunications network, transport network, etc..) suchasreductions in service untilblackouts, can havesignificantimpacts on the social system of that of the production of goods and services, on the system "environment”. • At the same time, "disturbances" or events on the environmentalsystem, on the social and productive produce more or lesssignificant impact on the systeminfrastructure

  7. This interdependencerequires the use of • appropriate tools for scenario analysis, • programming and intervention planning, • predicting crisis scenarios related to natural events, • the assessment of impacts of the crisis scenarios, taking into account the effects induced by global phenomena of interdependence between systems; • The management of emergency situations, • The decision support system (DSS), These instruments of new generation, require the fullest possible knowledge of the environmental, social and productive infrastructure of a region. ENEA - UTMEA

  8. Le smartcities, area… ENEA - UTMEA

  9. Le smartcities, area… thatis an integratedapproach of the city (area, region…) functions, and relatedtechnologiesfor the purpose of • provide new and betterservices to citizens, • improve the efficiency of production systems to makeservices more efficient the whole"system of systems" throughitsintegrated management • basically, the idea of Smart City is a development of ideas and technologies on severalfronts: • in the promotion, withineachfunction (energy, mobility, construction, economy, environment, social participation) and efficient use of advancedsystemscapable of increasing the quality and quantity of servicesprovided to citizens in order to increase the benefits received, also by the integration of data and simulations. ENEA - UTMEA

  10. the main area of research • The City Modelingdevelops a model-basedapproach on the scale of the wholecity, • The sectorUrban Networks has the objective of intelligent and efficient management of energy networks and urban utilities (electrical, thermal, digitalservices, transport….) and to offer new services for the citizen and for the utilities of the city, • The Smart Buildingssectoraimsatdeveloping an optimal design and management of the building to reduce the energyconsumption, • The Supply Technologies sectorwhereresearchis more focused on the components and especially on components for the production of renewableenergysuited to the urbanarea (heatpumps, solar energy, biomass, geothermal, wastevalorisation, wind-energy….)
