Wittekind und die Christianisierung • Wittekind is said to have had a vision: • He was disguised as a beggar spying on Charlemagne at Easter • Watched priest perform Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, people received communion and the child was given to each person. • Wittekind was captured when someone saw through his disguise He was later told that he was witnessing the “divine child, Jesus” behind the Sacred Host of the Mass. He soon converted to Christianity, many following in suit Interesting Fact: Wittekind was described as riding a black horse before his baptism, and a white horse after. White and black horses are often found on coats of arms and flags in Germany and England

  15. Das Ende • The Saxon rule came to an end in 1066 n. Chr. After the Norman Conquest • King Edward (the Confessor) had no heir, and the chosen successor was trumped by William of Normandy in the Battle of Hastings, ending the Saxon rule
