Plate Tectonics

History of pangaea
History of Pangaea

  • Alfred Wegener first proposed the idea of the continents being together and splitting up 300 million years ago.

  • It was not accepted by other scientists at first because it had no geological mechanism to back it up.

Alfred wegener
Alfred Wegener

  • He was the man who first came up with the Pangaea theory.

  • He was also an accomplished oceanographer.

  • Arthur Holmes was a man who elaborated on one of Wegener’s theories saying that the mantle undergoes thermal convection causing the continent to break up.

Convergent boundaries
Convergent Boundaries

  • A Convergentboundary (also known as a destructive boundary) is when two tectonic plates collide with each other.

  • In convergent boundaries there are earthquakes, mountains, volcanoes, landslides and mudslides.

  • The Himalayas were formed when the Eurasian and Indian plates collided.

Divergent boundary
Divergent Boundary

  • A Divergent Boundary is a linear feature between two tectonic plates moving away from each other.

  • They are found on the ends of continents and produce trenches, volcanic islands and rift valleys.

Transform boundary
Transform Boundary

  • A transform boundary is a place where 2 plates slide past one another.

  • They make faults such as the San Andreas fault in California and the plates involved are the Pacific and North American plates.

Real world connections
Real World Connections

  • We live on the North American plate.

  • The plates that border us are the Caribbean plate, the coco's plate, the Juan de Fila plate and the Eurasian plate.

  • No we are not because there is no fault line near us. California is though because they are near a fault. I predict many Earthquakes in the future but all out west of us.
