  1. Thyroid function notes Metabolism control

  2. A negative feedback loop • Hypothalamus triggered by stress or cold>releases TRH • Anterior pituitary triggered by TRH to release TSH • TSH triggers thryroid target cells to take in iodine and make the hormones: T3 and T4 • High T3 and T4 suppresses hypothalamus and pituitary so TSH is reduced

  3. What happens in the thyroid? Note that iodine is needed for T3 and T4 production

  4. So what do T3 and T4 do? • They act on nearly every cell inthe body, increasing the rate of cellular respiration. • Works with growth hormone to control bone growth and nerve maturation • Increases the body’s sensitivity to adrenaline • Regulate protein, fat, and carbohydrate, and vitamin processing (metabolism) • Increases heat production due to increased chemical reactions.

  5. Hyperthyroidism Too much thyroid hormones Graves disease the most common Symptoms: Insomnia, shaky hands, hyperactivity, excessive sweating, intolerant of heat, weight loss with appetite gain, frequent bowel movements, heart palpitations, muscle weakness, warm moist skin

  6. Hypothyroidism Too little thyroid hormones Symptoms: • Increased sensitivity to cold • Weight gain • Constipation • Slowed heart rate • Muscle cramps, joint pain • Depression • Poor muscle tone • High cholesterol levels
