Discussion The Student Voice – Can You Hear Us? • What do you want from this session? • With the other people on your table, discuss and write down your thoughts about the following topics: • What are internships? • What is student voice and where, when and how can it be used? • Do interns working within a university have their voice heard?

Centre for Employability Through Humanities Embedding employability into the curriculum through: • Realistic Work Experiences • ceth Gallery • uclanpublishing • UCLan Employability Framework • Modules which identify and develop skills from the framework

Ceth Student Internships The Student Voice – Can You Hear Us? • 12 interns over 5 years • We have a number of different projects to work on: - ceth Gallery Intern - Centre for Digitisation Intern - uclanpublishing - Promoting Modules - UCLan Employability Framework • Even though we are one of the team we still put up posters!

  9. The Button Game The Student Voice – Can You Hear Us? Using the 14 employability skills and the definitions of each skill the aim of this activity is to match up the definitions to the skill cards and discuss whether the academic and student versions say the same thing. In your groups: • Work out which definition belongs to which skill (there are 3 for each skill) • Work out which is the academic definition and which are the 2 student definitions • Discuss whether the academic and student definitions share a common meaning • Report back

Ceth Evaluation Report The Student Voice – Can You Hear Us? • The ceth Evaluation Report 2010 reports back to the funding body HEFCE • Evaluating the projects based on the objectives set in 2005 when ceth was created • The report acknowledges how the interns have used their student voice to assist ceth in the development of employability within UCLan and achieve their objectives: “ceth student interns have successfully raised the student awareness and obtained feedback” (ceth Evaluation Report 2010)

  11. What does the student intern get out of it? The Student Voice – Can You Hear Us? • UCLan Employability Framework (Day, 2010) • Every month we write a journal • Easily identify examples of where and how we have developed our employability skills

  12. Reflection The Student Voice – Can You Hear Us? Looking back at what you wanted to get from the session - did we fulfil the objective? We have looked at university student internships and whether we have a student voice in the development of employability. • ceth internships have given students a voice in employability development • The ceth internship role is one of being both an ear and megaphone bridging the communication gap between student and institution • Although they have had problems with some projects most have been a great success • ceth student interns get a great deal out of it too making them more employable
