Ch. 5 Nonverbal Communication • Is ANYTHING that is not language a nonverbal form of communication? • Nonverbal= • PRIMARY way of communicating (particularly feelings) • Often more believable than verbals (channel discrepancy) • Spontaneous/unintentional, Ambiguous, continuous, multichanneled, CULTURE-BOUND (see pp. 170-171)

  2. Functions of Nonverbal Communication • Reinforcingverbals • Complementing/accenting • Substitution • Contradiction • Regulation • Immediacy (seen via mimicry)

  3. Nonverbal Codes—Kinesics/Body Movement • Emblems (substitution word or concept) • Illustrators (literal) • Regulators (help flow) • Adaptors (have one?) • DECEPTION • microexpressions

  4. Eye contact and Facial Expressions • For facial expressions, see: http://www.cs.unc.edu/~andrei/expressions/ --6 primary facial categories that are cross-cultural. --BUT…rules of display vary by culture. Oculesics=study of eye movement

  5. Vocals/Paralanguage • Vocal Qualities --pitch, tone, volume • Vocalizations --moan, yawns --laughing/crying sound --back-channelcues • Silence=meaning!

  15. Short Essay Rubric • 8-9pts = acceptable answer, most components covered • 10-11pts = all components of question covered, use of examples, some terms. • 12pts= excellent application of terms and/or original examples
