  1. Assignment 1 Unit 2 Computer Systems

Task 1 Outcome - P1 • Part 1- Using the A3 poster provided on the wiki, identify (name) each component and explain the function (the role) of each component within the boxes provided (feel free to extend the boxes). • Part 2– From the box beneath the motherboard image, draw an arrow to identify the North Bridge and South Bridge chipset, write an outline description of what each bus will do. Within each box identify three components that communicate with each given chipset.

  3. Task 1 Outcome - P1 • Part 3– Complete the second A3 poster, identify (name) each peripheral and explain the function (the role) of each peripheral (input/output) within the boxes provided (feel free to extend the boxes). You must include • An explanation of how all the peripherals are attached to the computer. • The cable type/s. • Name the connection on the PC and draw an arrow from the box to the correct port on the diagram.

  4. Task 1 (Outcome P1) • Part 4– Complete the second table you must choose 5 different types of cable, You must provide • 5 different types of cable. • An explanation of the cable, (how does it work) (characteristics/properties/cost/transfer rates/connection points) • The devices the chosen cables are associated/connected with.

  5. Task 2 Outcome - P2 • Produce a written report that explains the purpose of an Operating System. Ensure that you make reference to the following core components; provide one specific example (screenshot or feature) for each bullet point: • Define the term “Operating System”. • Identify three example Operating Systems. • Managing resources (managing hardware). • Providing a User Interface (GUI or Command line). • Providing a Filing System (Secure, encrypted, FAT, NTFS, EXT3 and HFS). • Security (Firewall, Accounts, Access control, logon). • Features (ability to customise, ease of use and management).

  6. Assignment 1 Task 3 Scenario • You wish to advise customers about differences between Windows Operating Systems Mac OS and the Linux Ubuntu Operating System. • To help raise customer awareness produce a presentation that will comparethe following features and functions of the Operating Systems.

  7. Task 3 Outcome - M1 • Produce a presentation with one slide (8 slides in total) for each of the following bulleted points. • The Interface/shell offered by each OS, whether Command Line and/or GUI(s) is offered by each Operating System? • Identify and outline the inbuilt security features each OS provides. This can include Firewall (one or two way), User accounts (Root and administrator), and the use of permissions (Read, Write and execute within Linux). • Compare the File Systems supported by Each OS and briefly outline the key features and compatibility of each (NTFS, FAT, EXT2, EXT3). • Describe the availability of Device Drivers for each OS and where best these can be sought. • Identify four software utilities included within each OS (e.g. Office applications, browsers, etc.)
