  1. Male Reproductive System

  2. Vas Deferens • The main duct through which semen is carried from the epididymus to the ejaculatory duct. • One on each testicle • VASECTOMY?

  3. Vasectomy • A vasectomy is a surgical procedure performed on males in which the vas deferens are cut, tied, cauterized (burned or seared) or otherwise interrupted. • The semen no longer contains sperm after the tubes are cut, so conception cannot occur. The testicles continue to produce sperm, but they die and are absorbed by the body.

  4. Vasectomy • Sterility does not occur immediately after the procedure. • Men must use other methods of contraception until two consecutive semen analyses confirm that there are no sperm present in the semen. • This will take four to six weeks or 15-20 ejaculations to clear all of the sperm from the tubes.

  5. Vasectomy • In some, cases vasectomies may be reversed. • However, this should be considered a permanent procedure. • No guarantee of a successful reversal. • Why would someone get a vasectomy?

  6. Sperm • A sperm is the male sex cell. • It combines with the female egg cell, to form a zygote. • The formation process is called "fertilization."

  7. Semen • A whitish secretion of the male reproductive organs, containing sperm and consisting of secretions of the testes, seminal vesicles, prostate, and Cowper’s glands. • About 60% of semen originates from seminal vesicles. (provide energy) • About 35% from Prostate Gland (protection) • About 5% from Cowper’s Gland (lubricate the urethra)

  8. Seminal Vesicle • Pouch-like glands situated on each side of the male urinary bladder. • 1. Secrete seminal fluid that will ultimately become semen. (60%) • 2. Nourish and promote the movement of sperm through the urethra. (provides energy)

  9. Prostate Gland • The prostate surrounds the beginning of the urethra. • The prostate is actually not one but many glands, 30-50 in number. • Secretes a milky fluid that is released into the urethra at the time of ejaculation. • This milky fluid protects the sperm as it travels out the male and through the female reproductive tract. • Makes up about 35% of semen. (protection)

  10. Cowper’s Gland • A pair of glands located at the base of the penis. • Cowper’s Gland lubricates the urethra. • As sperm mixes with the clear fluid in the Cowper's gland, it makes up 5% of semen.
