What do we use minerals for • Mica - sheetrock, paints, hair dye, cosmetics, soap, electronics • Molybdenum - fertilizer, filament supports in light bulbs, steel • Nickel - nickel coins, stainless steel, alnico magnets, sheetrock • Phosphate - fertilizer, dishwashing detergent,laundry detergent • potassium (potash) - fertilizer, toothpaste • Silica - computer chips, glass, cosmetics, antacids, paint, laundry detergent, drain cleaner, quartz watches • Silver - photography developer, jewelry, electronics, silverware, dentistry • Sulfur - fertilizers, matches, car tires • Talc - baby powder, cosmetics, antacids, sheetrock, primer • Titanium - cosmetics, hand lotion, soap, toothpaste, hair dye, bug spray, primer, paint • Tungsten - filament in light bulbs, drill bits (tool steel) • Zinc - sunblock, fertilizer, cosmetics, dandruff shampoo, pennies, galvanized metal, brass, dry-cell batteries • Zirconium - deodorant, jewelry Pick 2 and explain where you have used them

  5. -Thinking about how minerals are taken out of the earth, what are downsides of mining? • Environmental effects: • To get 1 oz of gold, 30 tons of waste is created • Ores often contain other chemicals that can be released into the environment • Human effects: • Thousands of miners die each year, many are not reported. • 21 died in US in 2011 What are the negatives of mining?
