  1. People of the Plains By: Josh, Cam, Garrett, Chanel, Chaeeunand Hailey

Food! • Bison was the main source of food • There meat was eaten and horns made into cups or spoons • Pernmican ( ground up bison meat, lard, and dried berries) • Started gathering food from wild, then started growing there own crops. • They grew berries, maize, squash, beans, tobacco, sunflowers, and plums.

  3. Agriculture • Constructed blinds to hunt buffalo (wide to narrow) • They made buffalo pounds to collect buffalo and kill them with a bow and arrow. • Buffalo jumps were used my scaring/ forcing buffalo over the edge of a cliff to their death. • Started farming and women tended crops when men hunted the buffalo.

  4. Clothing • Bison skin was used for robes • Deer skin was used for tunics, leggings, skirts, cloths, and moccasins • Hides fur was kept on for winter clothing • Fur was faced inward to insulate the person wearing it. • Bison intestines used to stich clothing and tipi covers. • People wore feathered headdresses to show authority.

  5. Shelter • Usually lived in tipis • Used bison to make the surround and smoke/door flaps • Tipis were ideal because they were easy to build and take down. • Tipis used 3-4 poles (usually birch) then covered it in bison hide. • Bison hide was used as an insulator.

  6. Geography • Interior plains • Lived where there were vast amounts of bison • Lived on edges of plains or along rivers • Northern Canada • Moved by foot or by horse back

  7. Social Organization • The size of groups were based were based on the bison drive. • Basic unit of social organization.( 50-100 people) • Men were hunters • Women tended crops, cooked and made clothing

  8. Contact with other Groups • They could talk 6 different languages • Also have an effective sign language if others couldn’t understand one of the languages • They had wars but not to kill or conquer

  9. Other Information and Important Terms • They had a “Sun Dance” or “Thirsting Dance” • Proved that you could withstand pain and suffering. • Peoples would fast to prove strength • Young boys would pierce their chest with bones, have a rope tied to it and leaned backwards until the bones are ripped out. • These proved strength.
