Ku Klux Klan • The first branch of the Ku Klux Klan (also known as the KKK’s) was established in Pulaski, Tennessee, in May, 1866 • Most leaders of the KKK’s were former leaders of the Confederate Army • Nathan Forrest was the Grand Wizard and was also and outstanding general during the Civil War

KKK’s • The KKK’s wore masks, cardboard hats and draped in white sheets • The Klan broke into their houses in the dead of night, dragged them out of bed, and tortured them in the most inhuman manner • Klansmen tortured and killed black Americans and sympathetic whites, immigrants who they blamed for the election Radical Republicans, were also targets for their hatred

Lynching • Lynching is the practice whereby a mob—usually several dozen or several hundred persons- takes the law into its own hands in order to injure and kill a person accused of some wrong doing • This mainly happened to African Americans, an sometimes Native Americans, Jews, and other immigrants

  5. Lynching • Between 1882 & 1968 - 4,743 people died of lynching • 3,446 of them black women and men
