  1. Improve Urban Microclimate in cold winter cities around the Square and high-rise buildings Absorb, Harmony, Greenery…. SENV 7700 MSc (Sustainable & Environmental Design) 2012-2013 1155022512 LINGHU Liuyin

  2. BACKGROUND THE PROPOSAL TESTING THE PROPOSAL

  3. BACKGROUND ● Introduction of XI`AN ● Site status of ZHUHONG Road ● Actual situation on ZHUHONG Road ● TheProblems of Renewal Design

  4. BACKGROUND / Introduction of XI`AN • The capital of Shaanxi Province • City area is 9983k㎡, center city area is up to 275k㎡, • The population increases to 3,100,000, the center city population density is 11273p/k㎡. • The site is located on the center area which belongs to the residential district. 4

  5. BACKGROUND / Introduction of XI`AN • The sub-tropical continental monsoon climate • The Ⅱ Building Climate Zone of China Building Climate Zone • Belong to Cold Climate Zone of China Building Thermal Climate Zone Division • Site is in the medium-density urban area from Urban Climatic Map • Prevailing wind diagram, frequency wind in winter is from east 5

  6. BACKGROUND /SITE STATUS of ZHUHONG Road • Surrounding are residential area • Poorair quality and dusty • Greenary area less • Width:157m from south to north • Longth:1232m from east to west • In Weiyang District, Xi`an • Within second ring road • Long and narrow landform 6

  7. BACKGROUND /TheProblems of Renewal Design • Before renewal design buildings are behind the times, no facilities for people to rest. Some trees try to benefit pedestrians. No uniform car parking lots, cars always parking radomly and no tree shadows for cars. Solar heat gain, hard asphalt surfaces and glare can be uncomfortable for pedestrians.

  8. BACKGROUND /TheProblems of Renewal Design • After renewal design Asphalt pavement Opening square High-rise form wind throat Original low-rise markets 8

  9. THE PROPOSAL ● Methodology ● Preceding case simulation ● strategies

  10. THE PROPOSAL /Methodology • Methodology: CFD Simulation • Applying computation fluid dunamics(CFD) to the construction on planing stage, wind field in the planned buildings is analyzed and the con side of the design can be modified. The CFD approach is an economical and efficient way to improve planning quality. In the case study of an urban square planning,a detailed wind field was analyzed by CDF,and the result supports the planning design. • In order to get a mesoscale mode microclimate environment scale wind environment data,computational fluid dynamics simulation studies were carried out by ENVI-met.

  11. THE PROPOSAL /Preceding case simulation British Building Research Station Wind Environment Around Tall Buildings. Digest 141,May 1972.

  12. THE PROPOSAL /Preceding case simulation Wind speed simulation: wind amplification on square and building gaps. Receptor b3=14.5m/s the gap between the two buildings form a opening cause Corridor Effects. Receptor b2=16.4m/s. no closure from east to west made a wind field with high speed in the square. Receptor c1=17.3m/s. 11

  13. THE PROPOSAL /Preceding case simulation PMV simulation: PMV Value is out of comfort index at square and building gaps. . Receptor c3=-0.62 Receptor b2=-0.52 recommendation PVM value is -0.5 to +0.5.From these 9 receptors,we know that people feel cold in square and gaps between the buildings.

  14. THE PROPOSAL /Strategies • Ⅰ.Open forest square (street network) • Dividing mobile event square • Permeability material for pathway- red brick •  Polygon is loamy soil for planting   13

  15. THE PROPOSAL /Strategies Ⅱ.Ecological corridor In order to change the environment in a long run,a ecological corridor should be formed which take the place of the original lowrise markets in the east area near the site.This plan may be economical expense,but do good to this area even the whole city. 14

  16. THE PROPOSAL /Strategies Ⅲ.Open forest square and Ecological corridor Strategy Ⅲ =Strategy Ⅰ+ Strategy Ⅱ

  17. TESTING THE PROPOSAL ● Simulation #1 ● Simulation #2 ● Simulation #3 ● Comparison and analysis ● Final design and Conclusion 16

  18. TESTINGTHE PROPOSAL 9 receptors respectively on the wind intake side,middle and wind outlet side c1 c2 c3 b1 b2 b3 a1 a2 a3 17

  19. TESTING THE PROPOSAL /Simulation #1 only open forest square Effect is not obvious in corridor. Receptor b2=16.3m/s. Wind speed in square slow down. Receptor c1=10.9m/s. 18

  20. TESTING THE PROPOSAL /Simulation #2 only ecological corridor Effect is obvious in corridor, but speed is still high. Receptor b2=13.6m/s. Wind speed in square slow down. Receptor c1=10.2m/s. 19

  21. TESTING THE PROPOSAL /Simulation #3 both open forest square and ecological corridor Effect is obvious in Receptor b2=3.1m/s. Wind speed in square slow much down. Receptor c1=3.7m/s. 20

  22. TESTING THE PROPOSAL /Comparison and analysis Results from Simulation #1. new ecological pavement and trees planted in the wind field and wind intake openings work little for decreasing the wind speed and PMV. Results from Simulation #2. The effect works little for slow down wind speed as the same with Simulation #1. Results from Simulation #3. Strategy 3 plays a key role on changing wind speed and PMV value.Wind speed cut down to stable to 3.7m/s,and PMV get to a peak value amoung the 4 simulations. 21

  23. THE PROPOSAL /Final design and Conclusion 2. Ecological corridor could play a important part  in resist winter prevailing wind. • Strategy 3 is adopted to address the • main three environmental issue: • Heat Island effect in summer • Improve fierce wind in winter • Social connections in zhuhong road area 1. Open forest square adjest the building internal  and external temperature 3. Connect existing parks and landmarks,spots. 22

  24. TESTING THE PROPOSAL /Final design and Conclusion • Conclusion • This study shows how greenery and its layout do • have an impact on temperature, wind speed and people`s conduct.Greenway can be the way to address urban environmental problems and improve urban climate in ZHUHONG Road Xi`an. • Future work • 1.In summer Xi`an is dry-hot of day time, thus simulations should be carried out to get a accurate result if the proposal can work in summer. 2.Another choice is to optimize the building`s shape and land layout to improve the wind environment. More detailed architecture modificationdesign proposal will be provided in the future. 23
