  3. PHY343: Group project format • Groups of (5 +/- 1) students • Random group assignment • SAME project for all • Content of PHY343 is generated by YOU • Few lectures / events self- motivated work • Support by website, 2nd yr lab access,support sessions, industrial contact

  4. PHY343 objectives • Project- orientated work • Efficient networking within groups • Communication, organisation • Similarity to work environment • Industrial / business orientated

PHY343: Job interview fitness "Have you ever compared different technologies to solve a given problem, rather than look at the different problems a given technology can address?” "How do you think members of a team should interact with each other?” "Did you ever work to a deadline? Work for a client?” ”What is your most efficient role within a team?” "Have you ever balanced effectivity versus costs of a system?” "Have you ever dealt with a collaborator who doesn’t pull his/her weight?” "How do you make decisions in a climate of uncertainty, and sub- optimal information?” "Can you work constructively with people you dislike personally?” "Have you ever developed blue- sky thinking into a detailed, specific plan?"

  6. The project • Details later form J Kingsley • Real- world challenge: Ossila want to enter market • Science education product • Review science and market, analyse current products, why did they fail? • Develop better product (better in the commercial sense)

  7. Deliverables and Assessment • Technology Survey (20%) To academics in week 3 to 7 March • 2000 word report (30%) Fri 16 May am Turnitin • Peer assessment and project diary, Fri 16 May am To assess individual contribution (30%) • Project Presentation(20%) Fri 16 May 2pm+

  8. Technology survey (20%) • In week 3 to 7March, fix date with academic assessors. • Every group member attends and contributes, use ppt’s, speak in turns. • STRICTLY20 minutes in total, no more! • Review and analyse current products, the market they target, their (lack of) success and the causes • Expect detailed feedback from assessor

  9. Report (30%) • (2000 +/- 200) words, include word count • Structured, illustrated, referenced… • 2 parts:  1. Coherent overview over complete concept  2. in- depth description of your contribution • 2 hardcopies to Phys&Maths student office (G12 drop box) by Fri 16 May am • Electronic copy to Turnitin

  10. Project diary & Peer assessment (30%) • Project diary: Similar to lab book, keep one from day 1, keep a record of all your PHY343- related activities. Electronic diaries OK, but submit on DVD (not a hyperlink!) • Peer assessment: Rate your fellow group members’ contribution from (-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3) (worst to best). Criteria to be developed by yourselves. ZERO SUM rating: Peer assessment ratings must add up to zero. Exclude yourself. Rating form to be circulated. • Submit both to Phys&Maths student office by Fri 16 May am, together with reports.

  11. Project presentation (20%) • Presentation Fri 16 May, 2pm, HicksC40 • Present project work as ppt • Every group member speaks • Questions & Answers (incl. industrial partner)
