  2. Learning objectives • Identify how the representation of Brazil can be constructed in different ways through three different media platforms;moving-image, print and e-media • Evaluate howthe dominant ideologies are reinforced and/or challenged by the provided texts

  3. starter In pairs, make a spider diagram for what you consider to be the dominant representation of Brazil in the media.

  4. Group task With reference to your own detailed examples, explore the different ways in which Brazil is represented in the media today. In your groups of 3, each member must focus on a moving-image, print or e-media text. Refer to: • Analysing print (page 21 key concept booklet) • Analysing web-pages (e-media – page 22 key concept booklet) • Analysing broadcast (page 19 key concept booklet) • Consider theory and possible audience responses: Propp, Todorov, Barthes (enigma), Levi Strauss (binary opposites), David Gauntlett (‘pick and mix’ theory), Cohen (moral panics) etc.

  12. Representations How have the representations been selected, constructed, mediated and anchored?: • What are the ways of seeing Brazil? Consider the ideologies as values, attitudes and beliefs. • How are the dominant ideologies conveyed through the different texts? • How have the ideologies affected the production of the texts? • How are the dominant ideologies reinforced and/or challenged by texts? Consider the alternative and oppositional texts. How might they be interpreted and responded to by audiences?

  14. Analysing moving image You are going to undertake an audio/visual analysis of two contrasting representations of Brazil’s national identity. Use the information on page 19from your key concepts booklet as a guide for your analysis of HOW representations are constructed. Use the information on page 20 from your key concepts booklet as a guide for your analysis of WHY the representations are constructed.
