  1. Significance of domain names for business in the EU / Význam doménových jmen pro podnikání v EURadka MacGregor Pelikánová Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  2. The post-modern and (post-)crises global society is heavily dependent on the utilization of information systems and information technologies (IS-IT). The virtualization of almost all aspects of our current life and their transformation into electronic, so called “e-“ format, while using the e-net of nets par excellence, the Internet, is omnipresent and a successfully and sustainable business conduct in almost each and every country, and definitely in all EU member states, and industry, in general requires an appropriate strategy and use of the Internet. (MacGregor, 2012 ICLR). Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  3. What is the domain and what function has? What is the domain names and what function has? What is the DNS and what function has? …. Does it matter? It is virtual, has features of a mere referring code and there is almost an unlimited supply! 95-99% of domain names have values not exceeding the registration costs …. Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  4. BUT !!! There are domain names sold for over USD 1 000 000 or EUR 1 000 000! Thousand of businesses do not hesitate to spend over 200 000 USD per year to have its „own“ TLD and many of them are from the EU! TLD Registries, Registrants and Domain name Auctioners do massive business in the black number in the EU. Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  5. Registries and registrars as well as registrants especially from certain EU member states and certain industries are getting more than excited! Registration costs go down and number of registrations go up – this is a blooming market!!! Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  6. BUT !!! There are significant problems and issues • Governance, Control • International v. Supranational v. National v. Regional • Conflicts and disputes • More and more complex • Seldom black and white • A lot of confusion and missinterpretation Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  7. What do we know, for what we have a solid scientific evidence, in general • Multistakeholder model supporting decentralization and delegation • Basically private law contractual framework with standard elements • Growing number of TLDs, participants, attached knots and thus more and more domain names ICANN→TLD Registry→ Accredited Registrar→ Registrant Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  8. What do we know, for what we have a solid scientific evidence, in the EU • Choice between TLD .eu, 28 member states ccTLDs and of course gTLDs • The Registry for TLD .eu, EURid, fighting since 2005 for bigger market share (especially taking wanting to take away from gTLDs and ccTLDs of no EU member states) • EURid Progress Report suggesting a total success • Statistic and registrants confirm it only partially Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  9. Significance of domain names for business conduct in the EU? Do European businesses want to use more and more Internet domain for marketing, advertising, e-commerce and other aspects of e-business? Significance of domain names for business per se in the EU? Is there an European market with domain names? Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  10. Significance of domain names for business conduct in the EU? Do European businesses want to use more and more Internet domain for marketing, advertising, e-commerce and other aspects of e-business? YES! Business in the EU perceive domain names as an instrument for a successful business conduct (advertising, marketing, e-commerce) as well as subject matter of the business itself (registring and „selling“ domain names). What business from the EU does not use a website preferable attached to „its“ domain carrying a domain name with some reference to the business name or business type or trademark?!Location! Attraction! Help of SEO! Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  11. Significance of domain names for business conduct - Scientific evidence about the perspective of European registrants A domain name can perform a myriad of functions and definitely is a tool to build up and shape a promising business, but it is extremely rare that just the wording of a domain name per se would insure a long standing competitive advantage (MacGregor, 2013 ACC). Metropolitní univerzita Praha, o.p.s.

  12. Significance of domain names for business conduct - Scientific evidence about the perspective of European registrants For businesses in the EU, the presence of their “own” place and their “own” address on the Internet to research and collect information, to communicate, to advertise, and ultimately to sell, is one of the key factors influencing the prospects of a given business. Domain names seem to be capable of playing a vital interactive role and can shape the business and the business can shape them. There are small differences in the perception of the impact of domain names on e-commerce from the perspectives of European businesses (MacGregor, 2013 SciPapPar).
