A COMMITTEE IS CHOSEN THE COMMITTEE IS MADE UP OF THOMAS JEFFERSON, BEN FRANKLIN, JOHN ADAMS, ROGER SHERMAN, AND ROBERT LIVINGSTON JEFFERSON WAS CHOSEN TO DO THE WRITING DREW ON IDEAS OF JOHN LOCKE PEOPLE ARE BORN WITH NATURAL RIGHTS LIFE LIBERTY AND PROPERTY GOVERNMENTS INTERFERING WITH THESE RIGHTS MIGHT RIGHTFULLY BE OVERTHROWN

THE PREAMBLE • WHEN IN THE COURSE OF HUMAN EVENTS IT BECOMES NECESSARY FOR ONE PEOPLE TO DISSOLVE THE POLITICAL BANDS THAT HAVE CONNECTED THEM WITH ANOTHER, • AND TO ASSUME AMONG THE POWERS OF THE EARTH, THE SEPARATE AND EQUAL STATION TO WHICH THE LAWS OF NATURE AND OF NATURE’S GOD ENTITLE THEM, • A DECENT RESPECT TO THE OPINIONS OF MANKIND REQUIRES THAT THEY SHOULD DECLARE THE CAUSE WHICH IMPEL THEM TO THE SEPARATION

DECLARATION OF NATURAL RIGHTS(UNALIENABLE RIGHTS) • We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. 2.2 That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.

BRITAIN’S ADVANTAGES • STRONGEST NAVY IN THE WORLD • AN EXPERIENCED WELL TRAINED ARMY • THE WEALTH OF A WORLDWIDE EMPIRE • LARGER POPULATION THAN THE UNITED STATES 8 MILLION PEOPLE TO 2.5 MILLION • NOT ALL AMERICANS SUPPORTED INDEPENDENCE (LOYALIST)1 IN 5 AMERICANS • QUAKERS REMAINED NEUTRAL (PACIFIST)

  16. BRITAIN’S DISADVANTAGES • HAD TO FIGHT IN A FARAWAY LAND • HAD TO SHIP ALL SOLDIERS AND SUPPLIES A GREAT DISTANCE • RELIED HEAVILY ON MERCENARIES (HESSIANS)

  17. AMERICAN ADVANTAGES • FIGHTING ON THEIR OWN GROUND • WERE FIGHTING FOR A CAUSE AND TO PROTECT THEIR OWN HOMES AND FAMILIES • HAD GEORGE WASHINGTON AS THEIR LEADER • HE WAS UNMATCHED IN COURAGE, HONESTY, AND DETERMINATION
