  1. Qualifying for Challenge

  2. Qualifying Scores • There are three dimensions used to identify students who qualify for Challenge: Aptitude, Achievement, and Performance. In most cases, a student must have one qualifying item in two different dimensions. • The only exception is when a child’s composite aptitude score is 96NP (National Percentile) or greater. If this is the case, no other scores are required.

  3. Dimension A • Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT—given to all of our second graders) or another approved aptitude test • Verbal 93 NP or higher • Nonverbal 93 NP or higher • Quantitative 93 NP or higher • Composite 93 NP or higher

  4. Dimension B • MAP, PACT, ITBS, or another nationally normed achievement test • Math 94 NP or higher • Reading Comprehension 94 NP or higher • Advanced on PACT in the area (s) math or reading

  5. Dimension C • Performance Tasks Test • This test is given only if the student (s) have met one of the other dimensions and has been assessed and still does not qualify for challenge. This test is given in the spring. (March 5- 16, 2007) • Grade 2: 16/20 in Verbal or Nonverbal • Grade 3: 18/20 in Verbal or Nonverbal • Grade 4: 16/20 in Verbal or 22/28 in Nonverbal • Grade 5: 18/20 in Verbal or 25/28 in Nonverbal • End of 6th grade: GPA of 3.75 or higher.

  6. In Short-You Must Meet Two Out of the Three Criteria

Real Life • You can be twice exceptional. • You can be an “A student” and not qualify for Challenge. • You can qualify for Challenge and choose not to be served. • We are a state funded program and have to serve each grade a certain amount of minutes. Two hundred minutes for fourth and fifth grade and one hundred twenty-five minutes for third grade. • No! Challenge students will not make all A’s and be gifted in all subjects.

Things You Can Do in the Classroom. • Do not allow early finishers tutor other students or file papers. • Websites that students can do in the Class www.coolmath4kids.com a great website for all students. This website has higher order thinking math games on it like Lemonade stand and Rush- free. • Logic puzzles- You can go to www.logicpuzzles.com and print premade puzzles for the students to do- free. • The newspaper has crossword puzzles that they can do to build their vocabulary. • The Suduko puzzles are wonderful for the students to do. You can get those free as well on http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/sudoku_for_kids.htm • www.eduplace.com have wonderful activities for all students to do for free- Science, math, social studies, and language arts. • The Mad-Libs helps teach students the parts of speech.
