  2. 1956:The hard drive was born • IBM created the first hard drive for the RAMAC 305 system This hard drive is this size of two refrigerators and only holds 5 mb of space

  3. 1961 • Heads for disk drives now use “air bearings”

  4. 1963: removable • IBM invents the first removable hard drive the 1311 it held up to 2.6MB of space

  5. 1978:RAID(Redundant Arrays of Indepen. Disks) • The first RAID technology was patented

  6. 1980:1 Gb • IBM introduced the first 1 gig HDD which weighed 550 pounds and cost $40,000.

  7. 1985: ESDI • Enhanced Small Device Interface controller board • This allowed for larger/faster drives to be used

  8. 1992: Barracuda:seagate • The first hard drive to run at 7200 rpm (revolutions per minute) and store 2.1 GB of data

  9. 1996:Cheetah:seagate • The first hard drive to run at 10,000 RPM

  10. 1998: Microdrive:IBM • The smallest hard drive to date, it holds 340MB and it is 1-inch in size

  11. 2006: Raptor X • 10,000 RPM SATA hard drive holds 150 GB with a transparent window to show how it works.

  12. 2007:Hitachi • The first terabyte hard drive was formed
