Background of revelation • The disbelievers of Makkah has made many offers to Prophet Mohamed pbuh, including wealth, women and kingdom to stop him from spreading his message. • Then, they asked him to worshop their gods for one year; in return, they will worship his god for a year. • This surah responds to all their proposals definitely and decisively. 8. Virtues of this Sura • Prophet Mohamed pbuh has recited Surah Al Kafiroon and Surah Al Ikhlas in the sunnah prayers of both Fajr and Maghrib. • Prophet Mohamed pbuh has advised his companions to recite it before going to sleep. He has told that this will protect them from polytheism.

9. 1 بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

10. Words قُل يَآأَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ How Allah addresses believers & disbelievers ََيَا أَيُّهَاالَّذِينَآمَنُوا قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَاالْكَافِرُونَ O You whobelieve! Say, “O disbelievers!”

11. Words كَافِر • Some Muslims think that all people know what Islam is! Through Media, internet, … • Look at Muslims themselves. 90% or more don’t know what is in the Qur’an. And they expect others to know what Islam is? • This is really arrogance and forgetting one’s own job. Look at how many times the Prophet pbuh conveyed the Message to Quraish in Makkah.. for 13 years!!! How many years have we done? 13 hours so far?

12. Words قُل يَآأَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ 1 Plural singular كَافِرون كَافِرين كَافِر

13. 1 بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ • Allah is angry with the disbelievers. In the whole Qu’ran, Allah does not address them directly. • Should we not be alerted and respond immediately? We should think about what we are doing. Are we following our egos & traditions or are we following the Qu’ran and Sunnah?

15. Words لاَأَعْبُدُمَاتَعْبُدُونَ Words from the same root ع ب د. We will learn these systematically later. أَعْبُدُ نَعْبُدُ I worship We worship تَعْبُدُونَ You all worship

16. 2 Because concept of Allah in Islam and other religions is different. There it is polytheism or association with Allah.

18. Words وَلاَأَنتُمْعَابِدُونَمَآأَعْبُدُ 1 Plural singular عَابِدُون عَابِدين عَابِد

19. 3 You do not worship only ONE deity, i.e., Allah. You associate partners with Him or call someone as son of God or avtar (human form) of God or you have angels as daughters of God; and so on. You do not have pure Tawheed.

21. Words وَلاَ أَنَاعَابِدٌمَّاعَبَدْتُّمْ فَعَلْتُم عَبَدْتُم You all did You all worshipped

22. 4 لاَ أَعْبُدُ مَا تَعْبُدُونَwas about present situation وَلاَ أَنَاعَابِدٌمَّاعَبَدْتُّمْThis is about future. That is: No compromise in the matter of Deen (not because of arrogance, but because we are afraid of Allah).

23. 5 You don’t worship what I worship. (That is why I am not going to worship your way now nor in future)

25. Not مَآ What In this Surah, مَا is used ONLY in the sense of ‘what’

26. Abada used in this Surah… عَابِد عَابِدُونَ Worshipper worshippers I worship Worshippers You all worshipped We worship عَابِدون عَبَدتُّمْ نَعْبُدُ أَعْبُدُ

27. لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ (6) • Not a message to say that All religions are equal. • Neither a message that we should stop Da’wah. Did the Prophet stop preaching after this revelation? • It was revealed in response to offer of compromise. No compromise in faith matters.

28. In this Sura, we learnt that we should worship Allah alone and should never make any compromise when it comes to Deen. We do this not because of arrogance but because of fear of Allah’s punishment.
