  2. CILEA CILEA is a Consortiumof ten LombardUniversitiesestablished in 1974. CILEA provides Information and CommunicationTechnologyservices on behalfofuniversities, public organizations and enterprises. The missionisto coordinate and to develop initiatives for a better and more effective use of the new most advanced information and communication technologies in the fields of high performance computing, networking services and informatics. In 1998 CILEA started the project of the CDL,CILEA DigitalLibrarywith the aimofmakingavailabletoitsusersdigitalcontents. Itprovides cooperative initiativeswithorganisational and commercial support, technical management and assistancefor the access. Local loading • When CILEA deals with the publishers always requires the data concerning the subscribed material (object of the agreement) i.e. ownership data. • The publishers send the information (metadata and relative pdf) on DVD or via ftp. • We load the data on the server SDoS (Science Direct on Site), http://scienceserver.cilea.it through “loader” that have been developed according to the original format built for the Elsevier journals. SERVER SDOS CDL • At the moment on SDoS (Science Direct on Site) we have loaded the journals of the following publishers: • Elsevier (2350 e-journals) • Springer (1881 e-journals) • Ex-Kluwer (794 e-journals) • Blackwell (841 e-journals) • Kluwer Law International (47 e-journals) • IOP (46 e-journals) • Wiley (418 e-journals) D. Archiving and Preservation • In this way the data are archived and preserved. • Only an authorised user, according to the agreement, can be access on the remote publisher server and also on the local CDL server. • The access is so guaranteed even after the contract with the publisher has expired, which is commonly known as perpetual access or post-cancellation access SELL 2009 - Izmir CILEA 14

NEW SERVER SDOS • From January it’s available a new level of authentication: • a federated authentication (Shibboleth), supporting the Federation IDEM (IDEntity Management), the Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure of the GARR Network (http://idem.garr.it/). • This AAI (Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure) manages the procedures of authentication and authorization between an user, his organization and the services offered on the web. • On the new server are still available the old ways of authentication (IP and username/password). FEDERATION IDEM • IDEM uses Shibboleth, a system for a web single sign-on. • It’s based on a federated identity standard SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language), to provide a federated single sign-on and an attribute exchange framework. • A user belonging to an institution that joins the IDEM Federation can access to the journals loaded on our server SDoS from any point of the web (home, an other institution, and so on) using own organizational credentials.   18. FEDERATION IDEM • At moment in Italy has joined this initiative the consortia CILEA and CASPUR,13 universities and 16 research centers (CNR, GARR, INAF, ICTP, ISTAT). D. Dellisanti CILEA

AdvantagesFederation IDEM • Thanks to this federate approach the Federation IDEM offers benefits to the end users, member organizations and online service providers. • To the end users: • less passwords to remember; • an easy access to online resources, regardless the user location; • To the member organizations (Identity Provider): • reduction of costs connected to the creation and management of user profiles and to the implementation of new services; • Increase of the user satisfaction; D.
