  1. Air Quality Information Exchange experiences, problems, suggestions (EoI, ozone data exchange procedures) Libor Cernikovsky 8th EIONET Workshop Oslo, 6.-7.11.2003 EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  2. Ozone– general information • Annual data deadline: 30th June 2003 • Summer exceedances deadline: • end of each month • 15th September 2003 • ...published on ETC/ACC web site • ...Summer report (summary is available on the web already) EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  3. Ozone– remarks • long-time routine procedure without serious problems • few questions from countries only • main problem every summer:lack of clarity and/or missing data in the meta-information of stations EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  4. Ozone– news • Directive 2002/3/EC relating to ozone in ambient air came in force • MS shall provide the Commission: • Monthly data: before the end of the following month information on the exceedance of information and alert thresholds • Summer data not later than 31st October, additional (provisional) data for the current summer period (from April to September) EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  5. Ozone– news • Annual data not later than 30th September of the following year, validated information for ozone and precursors • Document „Information and data exchange Procedures and Formats“ in preparation (modification up to now used formats) EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  6. Ozone– news All values are to be expressedin µg/m³.The volume must be standardised at the following conditions of temperatureand pressure:293 K and 101,3 kPa The time is to be specified in Central European Time. EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  7. EoI - general information • EoI deadline: 30th September • DEM v6 release: 31st July 2003 • 1st question/bug reported: 13th August • DEM v6.1 release: 11th September • huge portion of e-mails on reported bugs • number of questions increased during days close to the deadline EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  8. EoI – important questions Definition of time in the DEM format the DEM expect a startdate/time of the measurement Example: COMPONENT Ozone, hour STATION 404- Const.Rebecqueplein 20000101 00:00, 10.5, 1 ... reports that the hourly average of ozone measured between 01/01/2000 00:00 and 01/01/2000 01:00 is 10.5 EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  9. EoI – important questions Quality flags in the DEM format The concentration without flag DEM understands as validated. DEM allows the following quality flags: Flag Defined as 1 Validated 0 Missing Value -1 Not Validated -2 Erroneous EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  10. EoI – important questions Pollutant‘s units in DEM Due to the fact that the DEM only supports a standard DEM unit, the users are notified before they start a Raw Data import, so they can check whether their data corresponds to this unit. EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  11. EoI – important questions Data submission Sending either by posting a CD-ROM or by transfer via FTP-service. EU MS need to notify the Commission, non EU MS the ETC/ACC, by e-mail that data has been processed by postal service or by ftp. All EEA Member Countries are required to upload the data also to the agreed data repositories reserved for their country. EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  12. EoI – important notes • do not use old versions of DEM ! • do not use DEM database twice ! • do not modify DEM database in MS Access ! • new quality control routine implemented in DEM... EUROPEAN TOPIC CENTRE ON AIR AND CLIMATE CHANGE
