  3. How to read a Codon Chart • Here is the step by step process of how to read a codon chart. Step 1: Know your mRNA sequence. Ex: AUGGAGCCUACUGAC * I like to break my sequence into groups of 3’s so I can easily see my codons.

  4. Step 2: • Using your mRNA codons determine which base is 1st, 2nd and 3rd. A1U2G3GAGCCUACUGAC * I like to write the number under the base, just in case.

  5. Step 3: • Find the row that belongs to the 1st base in your codon. Ex: AUG, where A is 1st 1

  6. Step 4: • Find the column for the 2nd base letter. ex: AUG, where U is 2nd. • The corresponding overlap is where you will find the Amino Acid. 2 1

  7. Step 5: • Find the small row that corresponds to your 3rd base letter. Ex: AUG, where G is the 3rd base letter. • In this case AUG codes for the Start or the Methionine Amino Acid. 2 • The corresponding overlap is where you will find the Amino Acid for codon AUG. 1 3
