Dr Wendy Burn • Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist in Leeds for 23 years • Work full time in the community, North West Leeds • Was a carer for my father who had dementia for 10 years • I have a strong interest in Training. Set up and was Head of the Yorkshire School of Psychiatry, responsible for training psychiatrists in Yorkshire. This has given me good links with local psychiatrists. • Am now Dean of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, responsible for national standard setting of Psychiatric training. This gives me links nationally at a high level. • Was a Clinical Lead for SHA, joint projects with Oliver during this time

Dr Oliver Corrado • Consultant Geriatrician in Leeds for 25 years • Based at SJUH, acute hospital, community work and liaison to the Mount (acute old age psychiatry unit) • Clinical Manager for older people’s services 1988 - 2003 • Strong interest in training held Local, Regional and National training roles (Clinical and College Tutor, Director of WYFS, Chair SAC in Geriatric Medicine and Lead Physician for SCE in Ger Med). • ‘Dementia Champion’ Leeds Teaching Hospitals 2010- present, and Chair ‘Acute Hospitals Dementia Champions Network’, represented ‘Acute Hospitals’ on SHA Dementia Board joint projects with Wendy during this time

  4. Previous Projects with the SHA • Reduction of antipsychotic prescribing for people with dementia • Increase in number of patients in Acute Trust in Leeds who were screened for dementia • Development of a dementia friendly ward in Leeds Acute Trust • Making Otley a dementia friendly town

  5. Possible priorities for the network • Increase the percentage of people with dementia who have a formal diagnosis • Understand the reasons for the variation in diagnosis rate across Yorkshire • Meet the Prime Minister’s Challenge of 66% by 2015

Possible priorities for the network • Decrease the wait for memory services, suggested national target is 6 weeks • Education and training in dementia awareness • Increase number of dementia friendly communities • Increase number of dementia friendly wards • Continue to reduce antipsychotic prescribing

  9. Today • We need your suggestions for priorities for the networks and how to achieve them • We know there is lots of good work on dementia going on, our hope is to connect things up so we all know what others are doing • We want Yorkshire to be best!
