  7. Vocabulary • Formula • Literal Equation An equation that states a rule for a relationship among quantities A formula with two or more variables. To solve for one of the variables, use inverse operations.

  8. Introduction • Formula: d = r ∙ t • What is the isolated variable in this formula? ______ • You can “rearrange” a formula to isolate any variable by using inverse operations.

  9. Steps for solving for a variable • Step 1: Locate the variable you are asked to solve for in the equation. • Step 2: Identify the operations on this variable and the order in which they are applied. • Step 3: Use inverse operations to undo operations and isolate the variable.

  14. Word Problems Solve the word problem The formula V = lwh relates the volume V, of a prism to its height, h, length, l, and width, w. If a prism’s volume is 60 cubic inches, its length is 3 inches and its width is 4 inches, what is its height? Solve for h.
