  1. THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW Galatians 3:19-25 www.worshipharvest.org

  2. OVERVIEW • Paul writes a strongly worded letter to the Galatians after they have added other requirements (the law: circumcision, Sabbaths, foods etc) to faith in Christ, for people to have a relationship with God. • Anything else that we think we must do to earn salvation diminishes the sacrifice of Jesus. He becomes an option. • Relationships are not based on rules, but rather, love. We are invited into a RELATIONSHIP BEYOND RULES.

  3. Gal 3:19-20 19 What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one. NKJV

  4. The law was not God’s original plan for relating with His people. It was ADDED 430 years after the promise. • Gal 3:17 • 17 And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. NKJV

  5. The law was meant to serve for a certain period of time. i.e. It was added TILL the Seed should come. The Seed came, what’s the law still doing here? • Rom 10:4 • 4 For Christ is the end of the lawfor righteousness to everyone who believes. • NKJV

  6. Col 2:14 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. NKJV Eph 2:15 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, NKJV

  7. The law was given to to AMPLIFY sin so that it is clear to everyone that it is IMPOSSIBLE to fulfill God’s demands and we therefore need a SAVIOR. • Rom 3:19 • 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. NKJV

  8. Rom 5:20 20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, NKJV Rom 7:9-10 9 I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death. NKJV

  9. Gal 3:21 21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. NKJV • The law was never the problem, and shouldn’t be looked at negatively. It works if we let it serve its purpose of amplifying sin; so we can run to the Savior!

  10. Rom 8:3-4 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. NKJV

  11. Gal 3:22-23 22 But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. NKJV

  12. ALL have sinned, and therefore deserve nothing but punishment from God. • And yet, those who believe are rendered righteous and get ONLY GOOD from God. Rom 3:23-24 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, NKJV

  13. Gal 3:24-25 24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. NKJV • The law meant to bring us to Christ, just like the school system is designed to help us graduate. Thereafter we are not under school rules! We can’t hide when we see the Deputy HM on the street!

  14. The law is equated to the school system while Christ and the church to a marriage. In one you prove yourself through tests and exams to get a certificate. • In the other, you get a certificate before proving yourself. In fact, there are no written tests and exams to prove yourself. It’s the love you receive that enables you. Since You Have Come To Christ, IT’S TIME TO GIVE UP THE RULES
