  2. Historian: My great grandfather Samuel Erlich came to Ellis Island in 1914. He came from Poland, Europe. He came on a boat from Poland and arrived in New York12 days later from when the boat left the dock. He was only four years old when he came to America. When he got to Ellis Island he took another boat to Detroit.

  3. Economist: Back then, life was hard for some people including my great grandfather. People worked hard and only got paid a little each day. At the maximum people got paid five dollars a day. Some people had five jobs at the same time. My great grandfather had two jobs. He was a producer and a car maker. This all happened in 1921.

  4. Geographer: It is a whole process to come from a different country. You have to pack, sign papers and documents, go to the dock, leave on the boat, go to America, check in, go on a different transportation to a different state or stay in New York, arrive in your different state, unpack, and get to know the city. Those are all the things that my great grandfather had to do once he arrived in New York and departed to Detroit.

  5. Political Scientist: My great grandfather came to Ellis Island. He came because his dad thought they would have a better life in Detroit and he thought he would get paid more money. He wasn’t right at all. Actually, he got paid less money in Detroit. He did not have a better life in Detroit because his son got made fun of. He stayed in Detroit because his family did not have enough money to go home.
