2. Origin of the Term

3. Create an Explosion in Your Writing Pick the most interesting or important words in a sentence. Write another sentence or phrase related to the word(s). The elaboration should still flow with the ideas but create more detail. Depth charge more layers to create a bigger explosion.

4. Let’s Look at an Example Barely awake, I climb out of bed before dawn on Black Friday. Barely awake, I climb out of bed like a feeble old lady before dawn on Black Friday.

5. Depth Charge #2 Barely awake, I climb out of bed like a feeble old lady before dawn on Black Friday. Barely awake, I climb out of bed like a feeble old, ailing granny suffering from creaking bones and poor eyesight, before dawn on Black Friday.

6. Now It Is Your Turn… Locate one sentence that you’ve written from any of your writings, including your vocabulary story. If you’ve started your draft, use that. Circle a word that you’d like to depth charge. Add detail or description or figurative language to explode that word(s).

7. One more time… Circle another word(s) that stands out. Add details/descriptions. Boom! You’ve depth charged your paper.
