  1. Sakai, MDID, and IRIS-CCO Interoperability and ‘using’ at the Rice Visual Resources Center Mark Pompelia, VRC Director VRA Annual Conference, March 29, 2007

  2. Sakai, MDID, and IRIS-CCO Sakai • “Online collaboration and learning environment deployed to support teaching and learning, group collaboration, support for portfolio, and research collaboration.” MDID • Madison Digital Image Database • Image presentation system IRIS • Image Resource Information System • Collection management system CCO • Cataloging Cultural Objects • Display rules for using VRA Core

  3. Sakai, MDID, and IRIS-CCO Background • WebCT license change • PAST: One student = one user • NEW: One student multiplied by X number of classes = X users • Dramatic increase in annual fees • Open source solution? • Sakai!

  4. Sakai, MDID, and IRIS-CCO Sakai Timeline • 2004 • Implementation • 2005 • Yearlong pilot • 2006 • Unveiled for campus-wide use for spring semester as OWL-Space • Had immediate buy-in: business school, science and math departments, and any new course Web accounts had to go through OWL-Space • However: no native image management or presentation tools

  5. Sakai, MDID, and IRIS-CCO MDID Timeline • 2005 • Investigation period from January to June • Selection of MDID due to open source nature and intuitive and easy to use interface • Instructional Technology installation period during autumn • VRC created its data model from IRIS fields • VRC digital collection created during winter break, upload 12,000+ images • 2006–2007 • 1.5 year pilot • Re-branded as IMM (Instructional Media Management) within OWL-Space • Currently adding 800-1,000 images per month • Revised data model to reflect CCO display fields

  12. Sakai, MDID, and IRIS-CCO IMM field definitions: CCO display

  13. Sakai, MDID, and IRIS-CCO IRIS-CCO • Note: This is CCO as implemented by IRIS developers and collective in v.05 • CCO display fields employ qualifiers • For example, agent role (painter, architect, sculptor), location type (repository, discovery location, creation location), etc. • CCO display fields concatenate repeating fields • For example, multiple agents or locations • Display fields are not browse fields • Remove qualifiers and repeating fields! • Lesson learned: • Data model must reflect not just desired content (agent, location, etc.) but also anticipated data behavior (search v. browse v. display)
