  1. Four year PhD-studentship available from Oct.2011 Supervisors: Professor S. Radford and Dr D. Brockwell (Leeds) and Dr D. Lowe and Dr A. Buchanan (MedImmune) Investigating the role of protein dynamics in the aggregation biopharmaceuticals Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to study the molecular mechanisms of protein aggregation – a major hurdle that must be overcome to translate a promising candidate to market leading biopharmaceutical. You will use a battery of biophysical techniques (NMR, mass spectrometry, hydrogen exchange, fluorescence spectroscopy and light scattering) toenable prediction of the aggregation propensity of candidate drugs from simple structure / sequence parameters. This position is one of several sponsored by MedImmune, a key player in the burgeoning biopharmaceutical sector. The research will be carried out primarily in the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology, but will include visits of up to several months to MedImmune, to exploit the expertise and advanced technologies available there. Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr D. Brockwell (0113-343 7821; d.j.brockwell@leeds.ac.uk) http://www.fbs.leeds.ac.uk/staff/Brockwell_DJ/index.htm This studentship is available to UK/EU applicants seeking entry in the academic year 2011/12, and provides full support for tuition fees in addition to a stipend (£15,000 pa). Applicants should have at least a 2:1 Honours degree in Biochemistry or a related discipline. Application forms and instructions on how to apply can be downloaded from http://www.fbs.leeds.ac.uk/gradschool/research/res_degrees.htm. Please state “MedImmune biopharmaceutical aggregation” on your application form.
