Last time we talked about compound words.
These words had more than one syllable.
The syllable of a word is the beat of the word.
The word sidewalk has two syllables because it has two beats.
Words with one syllable, a short vowel sound and end in s ,l, f, or z follow a special rule.
The s, l, f, or z are doubled.
I will teach you a trick to remember which letters get doubled.
Just remember this sentence....
Sammy loves free zebras.
Read the following list below and put them under the sound.
Find the words that need the last letter doubled in the list below.
Did you find them all? They are:
Notice the word seal ends with /l/ but does not have a short vowel sound.
