  4. Verb stems • Every verb has a stem followed by an ending. • The stem tells the verb’s meaning. • An infinitive ending doesn’t name a subject. -ar habl verb stems infinitive endings com -er escrib -ir

  5. Conjugating the verb • To give the verb a subject, you conjugate it. • To conjugate a regular -ar verb in the present tense, drop the -ar ending of the infinitive and add these endings. • Each ending goes with a particular subject. cantar cantamos yo canto nosotros(as) tú cantas vosotros(as) cantáis Ud., él, ella canta Uds., ellos, ellas cantan

  9. Irregular verbs • Irregular Yo forms: • Salir – (Yo salgo) to go out, to leave • Traer – (Yo traigo) to bring, • Venir – (Yo vengo) to come VENIR +A+ TIME (to say at what time something happens) • Tener – (Yo tengo) to have • Poner – (Yo pongo) to put

Conjugation of tener • Use the verb tener to tell what someone has. • To conjugate the yo form, drop the -er ending and add -go. • To conjugate all the other forms except for nosotros(as) and vosotros(as), change the -e to -ie. nosotros(as) tenemos yo tengo tú tienes vosotros(as) tenéis Ud., él, ella tiene Uds., ellos, ellas tienen

  11. Tener expressions • *Tener must be conjugated for the subject* • Tener que + infinitive (To have to…) • Tener sed (To be thirsty) • Tener hambre (To be hungry) • Tener ganas de + infinitive (To feel like…) • Tener calor (To be hot) • Tener frio (To be cold) • Tener prisa (To be in a hurry)

Irregular verbs • Ser – (Yo soy, tú eres, él/ella/usted es, nosotros somos, ellos/ellas/ustedes son) • Ir – (Yo voy, tú vas, él/ella/usted va, nosotros vamos, ellos/ellas/ustedes van) • Stem-changing verbs: • *Jugar – (Yo juego, tú juegas, él/ella/usted juega, nosotros jugamos, ellos/ellas/ustedes juegan) • *Querer – (Yo quiero, tú quieres, él/ella/usted quiere, nosotros queremos, ellos/ellas/ustedes quieren)
