The ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education • Integrated platform supporting research and teaching in UK education institutions • Portal providing: • simple All Database searching across Web of Science plus additional products that an institution subscribe (Journal Citation Reports not included in All Databases Search) • access to • Web of Science (now includes Conference Proceedings Citation Index- Science ) • Medline (1950 – present) • plus additional products and external collections / websites

  4. Who hosts the service? • The ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education is hosted by Thomson Reuters • Thomson Reuters own the databases and the application • Mimas, The University of Manchester support the service • JISC funded service • JISC Collections negotiate and manage the agreement

Additional products Examples of additional products available: • Century of Science (1900-1944) and Century of Social Science (1900-1955) • Backfile and cited reference data • Web of Science Backfiles • Science Citation Index Expanded with Cited References (1945–1969) • Social Science Citation Index Expanded with Cited References (1956–1969) • Current Contents Connect • Current awareness service • Journal Citation Reports • Science & Social Science Editions • Derwent Innovations Index • Finds specific patents & cited patents

As a registered user, you can take advantage of these convenient features: • Select a start page • Save searches to the ISI Web of Knowledge server. • Set up search history alerts, citation alerts and RSS feeds • Create custom journal lists for focused browsing and table of contents alerting (CCC subscribers only). • Save and manage your references online with EndNote Web • Automatically sign in every time you access ISI Web of Knowledge. (Note: Users of public computers should not select this option.)

Content of Web of Science • The Web of Science databases are: • Science Citation Index Expanded (1970 – ), Author Abstracts available from 1991 • Social Sciences Citation Index Expanded (1970– ), Author Abstracts available from 1992 • Arts and Humanities Citation Index (1975– ), Author Abstracts available from 2000 • Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Science (1990-) • Coverage: • more than 8,500 journals & conference proceedings • 5,900 SCI 1,725 SSCI 1,144 ADH • average of over 24,000 new items added each week • Quarterly enhancements

Features of Web of Science • Search citation databases individually or simultaneously • General, Advanced and Cited Reference searching available • Standard Boolean operators • and/or/not/same and truncation • Phrase search - use quotation marks • Form and Set based searching • Full citation searching • References to related records • Links to other databases and external resources • Register for additional features

Distinct Author Sets: shows sets of papers likely written by the same person Sort options Navigate results pages Output options – additional options at bottom of screen Analyze:go to the records analysis page where you can view and rank summary data by various fields Create Citation Report: Provides aggregate citation statistics for a set of search results Click here to mark records to add to marked list Click on article title link to view its full record Options to refine the search on the summary results page

Back to search results summary Linking options Click on an author name to retrieve all records by that authors of that name Shows a list of articles that cite this article Links to articles which share one or more items in the original article’s bibliography Graphical representation that shows the citation relationships between a paper and other papers using visualization tools Click to create a citation alert This takes you to the records bibliography of cited references

Linking Options • OpenURL linking to an institutions electronic resources • Links to ‘Full Text’ • Provides links between ISI Web of Knowledge resources and electronic full text • Holdings links to OPAC – up to 8 can be enabled • Links to paper journals • Links through to additional online journals • Alternative route to electronic journals • Linking options are free (institution required to contact the helpdesk to enable the link option(s)

  24. Go to Marked List Click to add selected records to marked list Indicates record in Marked List Click to add to marked list – then select ‘Add to Marked List’ or navigate to next page of results

Use the drop-down box to access records marked in other products Select additional fields to export by selecting the check boxes – note: may reduce numbers you can download Select the desired output option You can sort records by Latest Date, First Author, Times Cited Conference Title or Source Title

Web of Knowledge – All Databases Search • Search the content of multiple Thomson Scientific products and other external resources simultaneously • External collections selected by default • Same interface as other Web of Knowledge products • Linking options available directly from results screen
