History • The name "Moldova" is derived from the Moldova River • World War I brought in a rise in political and cultural (ethnic) awareness among the inhabitants of the region, as 300,000 Bessarabians were drafted into the Russian Army formed in 1917 • Bessarabia proclaimed independence from Russia on February 6 • The Soviet Army re-captured the region in February–August 1944, and re-established the Moldavian SSR. • The first democratic elections for the local parliament were held in February and March 1990. Parliament adopted the Declaration of Sovereignty of the "Soviet Socialist Republic Moldova", which, among other things, stipulated the supremacy of Moldovan laws over those of the Soviet Union
